If you are like me, you are one busy mom!
Going here and hurrying there, trying to keep up with the to-do lists and the over abundance of laundry, the dinner planning, homework and the list goes on… and on top of all of that you want to offer your kiddos healthy snacks.
We’ve got fresh fruit and veggies down in our house but sometimes I need something that is all put together and ready to-go for church, going to work or wherever so we’ve been making these healthy snack mixes every few months.
And I know when you are eating real foods, buying pre-packaged snacks can be like a needle-in-the-haystack when it comes to finding something healthy and it can also be hard on your budget, but these are only as expensive as you make them!
What you need:
Anything that your kids might like but here are some ideas:
almonds
walnuts or other nuts
pretzels
yogurt covered pretzels
sunflower seeds or other seeds
raisins
craisins or other dried fruit
a low sugar cereal
crackers, like Annie’s bunnies
dark chocolate chips
fruit chips, like banana chips
popcorn
etc.
What to do:
- Gather your specialized variety of food choices along with a few zip bags and a cup
- If you have a child ask them to help and decide how many of each choice they will fill into each bag.
- Fold bag over cup for easy filling and add the food, we added about 10 pieces of each kind of food.
- Zip the bags and store in the pantry or cupboard for easy to-go snacking
- Enjoy!
I love your snack mix! We too love a similar mix. One note of caution if I may. There are so very many children, and adults, that have nut allergies. Some can be as severe as just smelling them. It can be deadly for many. We LOVE nuts over here in our home, but over the years we have come in contact with many that cannot have them. When we snack on nuts I always make sure my children wipe down their hands and faces before going into public areas (playground, museums) where other children will be who may have allergies to the nuts to help prevent the oils from the nuts spreading from my children’s hands to public spaces.
I was as aware of how difficult allergies can be for some until my third child was born who had a dairy allergy. Thankfully she grew out of it, but that year we were very conscious of others touching her who may have been eating a simple cheese stick. It can be very scary as a parent.
That’s very true! Thank you for that word of caution, good tip!
