]]>This year’s Random Acts of Kindness Day falls on February 17, 2016.
Doing acts of kindness make us feel good about ourselves. The person on the receiving end of our kindness gets extra love that day. There is just something that makes our hearts lighter knowing we put a smile on someones face – even just for a moment.
My family has this great list of things we do in honor of Random Acts of Kindness day.
Cut out as many hearts as you can out of construction paper and tape them to the inside and outside of the car. Set aside a few of them and write reasons why you love that person. When my husband was deployed, the kids and I sent him a “heart attack” care package. We stuffed that box full of hearts! So fun!
My husband and I will cut out 7 hearts from construction paper – 7 per child. For one week we tape one heart to each of our kids bedroom doors. On the hearts we write the reasons why we love that child. Examples: You are creative, You are funny, You are smart, You love to read, You give the best hugs, etc.
Are there stores in your community that still have public boards up so people may pin things that they have for sale or their missing dog posters? We made a “take what you need” poster and pinned it up at a local grocery store here in town.
Life can be hard. If you know someone who is sick, mourning the loss of a loved one, just had a new baby, a shut in or someone who is struggling in a hard season of life and could use a pick me up – bring them a meal or special desert.
Once a year we will collect items to be donated to the local shelter. This past November we were able to donate a box full of winter hats, gloves and socks.

]]>The post Avoid Cabin Fever This Winter With These Fun Family Activities appeared first on Day2Day Joys.
]]>I’m not a cold weather person. If possible, I would hibernate all winter long. That’s not very realistic though so I’ve learned that you have to make the most of it.
If you have kids, especially little ones, things can get a bit hairy and cabin fever can set in if you limit activities due to the cold weather. You may have to get a bit more creative than you do in the summer but there are plenty of fun family activities to enjoy this winter.
If you have an aversion to cold weather like I do, sometimes you just need to push through it, bundle up, get outside, and have some fun. If you have snow you can build a snowman, go sledding, gather up fresh snow for snow cream, or stage an epic snowball fight. No snow? Then take a hike or go geocaching. The activity will warm you up and you can soak up some much needed vitamin D in the process.
If it’s just too cold to safely enjoy some outside time, consider taking a drive. Now if you have little ones who really do not like the carseat, then this activity may not be for you. However, if that’s not a problem, just getting out of the house and taking in the scenery is a great way to enjoy some family time.
Make some hot cocoa, grab some blankets, and snuggle up on the couch for family movie time. Let the kids pick the movie even if you’ve seen the movie twenty-five times already.
Board games are a great way to connect with each other and pass the time on a cold winter day. Some of our kids’ favorite games over the years have included Hi Ho Cherry-O, Candy Land, HeadBanz, Monopoly, Life, Clue, Scrabble, and Apples to Apples.
I know crafts with kids strikes fear in the hearts of some moms but not all crafts are super messy. Your tolerance for messy crafts will impact exactly what you create but don’t let it stop you from having fun. Besides, messes can be cleaned up and little ones can help with that. You could make snowflakes out of coffee filters, or have fun with glue with a Cotton Ball Penguin, or make a Paper Plate Snowman.
I’ve never met a person that didn’t like cookies. Spending time with your kids in the kitchen is a fun way to connect with them and help them learn important life skills. Keep tasks age appropriate but even young kids can help measure, mix, and scoop.

]]>When your kids are really little, they happily go to bed at their regular bedtimes on New Year’s Eve. Umm, okay, maybe not happily but they’re still oblivious to the idea of staying up until midnight to welcome in the New Year.
At some point though, they will want to stay up. In fact, they might even beg to stay up until midnight. Perhaps you are like me and are at the point where you’d prefer to let the new year arrive while you sleep. However, saying yes to staying up with your kids to celebrate New Year’s Eve can actually be a fun way to spend time together as a family.
I remember the first time my kids both wanted to stay up and celebrate the new year. They were eight and five at the time. My oldest daughter had attempted to stay up the year before but in the end sleep won out. This particular year they had teamed up and were determined to make it.
They campaigned for us to let them stay up and we ultimately said yes. We decided to turn it into a fun family night. We made our favorite appetizers, had a family bowling tournament with the Wii, and just before midnight we turned on the television to watch the ball drop.
Apparently, welcoming the New Year wasn’t quite what our girls were expecting. We got a “That’s it?” once it turned midnight. And then our very tired and somewhat disappointed youngest daughter proceeded to put her head down and cry.
The disappointment wasn’t enough to deter our girls from wanting to stay up and celebrate the New Year in the years that have followed. We have continued to try and make it a fun night for the family and we have a lot of great memories of our little celebrations, even the one that involved tears.
Depending on the size of your family, let everyone pick a favorite party food or agree to a few different party foods for that night’s menu. There are lots of fun and healthy options out there like these Fun & Easy Fruit Rockets or these Zucchini Pizza Bites
Gather up a few of your family’s favorite games and enjoy a family game night. Games are a great way to pass the hours and usually bring about a lot of laughter.
Spend some time discussing your favorite moments of the year. You could even start a memories journal and write them down each year and then read back through them each year on New Year’s Eve. Take a moment to give thanks as a family for those good memories.
Take a little time to talk about something you would like to do together as a family in the new year. Perhaps it’s a one time event like running a 5k together or taking a family hike once a month. It could be finding a place to serve together in your community or setting a goal to double the number of Operation Christmas Child boxes you donate. Setting a family goal is a great way to encourage unity in your family.
Gather some leftover party horns, streamers, confetti, and party hats. At the stroke of midnight, dance around the living room, blow your party horns, and see how much noise your family can make. You’re guaranteed to start the new year with laughter and smiles.
Celebrating New Year’s Eve with your kids can become a treasured family tradition that will provide lasting memories.

December always has a way of sneaking up on us, doesn’t it? I know for our family, with homeschooling, November birthdays, and Thanksgiving, before you know it- December is here! And if we aren’t careful, it can be really easy to get swept up into the massive consumerism of the holiday season and completely miss out on the opportunity to share with our girls the REAL reason we celebrate in the first place.
Jesus, of course! So here are four things that our family does to make sure to keep Jesus at the forefront of all of our celebrating.
Is there anything more beautiful than celebrating the advent season? We make sure to have our family present in church every Sunday during the holiday season. Our kids sit in the service with us, so they get the chance to see our candles being lit, hear the progression of the Christmas story, and the beautiful worship music all preparing our hearts and minds for the wonderful celebration of the birth of Jesus! We also count down to Christmas with…..
Have you ever heard of Truth In The Tinsel? It is a wonderful program for the 24 days in December leading up to Christmas to help teach the Christmas story to our littles through hands on crafts and stories. Each day gets a verse, a craft, and an activity to help them remember all of the special details that happened before our Savior was born. We have done Truth In The Tinsel for the last few years and it has been such a blessing to our family! I recommend it to every family I know who has small kids. They love it!
(PS. If you don’t want to do a craft every day, they have an option to just buy a pack of coloring page style ornaments. So you can still teach the story but have an easy craft to do! Perfect!)
OCC has been such a blessing to our family! We really want Abigail (and Mabel as she grows!) to learn to GIVE to others, especially those in need. Taking the focus off of themselves and the things that they want or can get, it helps them to turn their eyes to others instead. And as Christian parents, there is almost no better and more tangible way for us to teach them the concept of “loving your neighbor” than through OCC! We love to shop year round with those sweet kids in mind. It has been really neat to listen to Abigail talk about mailing “the little girls” gifts and to go shopping and see her thinking about what they might like. We shop for little toys and craft supplies, toiletries, and other fun things little girls like Abigail would like. Every year we also choose to track our boxes so we can find out where our boxes are going. Last year they went to Mexico and the year before that they went to South America!
Another way that we keep Christmas from becoming completely overwhelming and about the presents- we only do 3 gifts for each of our girls. As they get older, we plan to incorporate more of the symbolism of Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh into their actual gifts. But, for now, we simply choose three items we know they would love or need to represent the 3 gifts the wise men brought to Jesus. Abigail loves that and we love the opportunity to have just one more way to point her to Jesus this Christmas.

]]>I remember doing crafty things with my Grandma and my Mom so I hope my kids will also cherish times together getting crafty. Now as an adult, I still love doing crafty things and this love of getting crafty is being past down to my kids, hopefully.
I am also a crafty things collector. I have numerous things in plastic containers, all labeled… now if I could only get that organized in other areas of my home.
This is a simple tutorial of how to DIY for letter artwork that can represent your last name or individual’s names in your family. My two older kids and I made this for London, the youngest child.
This is such a simple, easy idea to make with your kids. With the Holidays approaching, it could even be a nice, thoughtful gift.

]]>The post Tips For Eating Healthy During The Holidays appeared first on Day2Day Joys.
]]>Written by Kari @ Kari Newsom Contributing Writer
Itâs that time of year again.
As a Health and Nutrition Coach, I always have people ask me for some tips on how to successfully celebrate special occasions without completely going off the deep end when it comes time to eat.
The first and most important thing I always tell people is this:
All to often we try so hard to do âthe right thingâ about the whole âeating during the holidayâ issue, that we actually end up NOT enjoying this time of year.
Donât do that anymore. Eating healthy and making healthier choices isnât about being miserable. I promise.
There are a couple pointers I like to give people who donât want to go crazy, over indulge and completely get off track with their healthy lifestyle.
If you are like the average person, this time of year {or any celebration for that matter} can be a challenging time.
My family typically eats extremely healthy, BUT I donât freak out and go crazy that Iâm not getting my organic and fresh foods. I am always thankful that someone would take the time to prepare a meal for us to enjoy â whether itâs considered âhealthyâ in my book or not. Since 98% of the time we eat extremely healthy and disciplined at home, I never feel guilty when those occasions arise where we arenât able to eat that way.
If there are certain foods that you absolutely cannot eat (if you have allergies or have celiac, etc.) then speak with the host for that day and explain your situation and ask if it would be okay if you brought some of your own items so you can still sit down and enjoy the meal with everyone else. Many times you will find that the host may offer to make some dishes according to your needs. If your eating preferences are just that, preferences, then itâs up to you to make smart choices while you are filling your plate.
If you are prone to eating TONS of food and filling your plate to overflowing, then going back for seconds and thirds â try eating a small meal before you go to your Thanksgiving celebration. It doesnât have to be a rich meal, just a small meal that will help fill you up enough where gorging out on food doesnât look so appealing to you! Youâll still get to enjoy the food on the table, you just wonât be shoveling it all in your mouth like thereâs no tomorrow.
Drinking a glass of water about 30 minutes before sitting down to eat can make a person feel full, so you wonât end up eating as much.
Make a decision to only have one plate of food, which means smaller portions of each item. Not always easy, but your stomach will thank you for it once dessert time rolls around.
If you are a dessert sampler like some {GUILTY], then donât take full size servings of each dessert. Cut in half, thirds or quarters so you can sample all the wonderful goodies, without consuming the amount of an entire pie or cake by the time youâre done.
If your eyes are always bigger than your stomach, then itâs about discipline, discipline, discipline! Just CONTROL yourself when filling your plate!!! Yes, it smells so good and looks amazing and Aunt Susieâs mashed potatoes are the bomb, but you donât need a mountain of food to enjoy all that goodness.
Studies show that the first couple bites of food are the most intense and satisfying â taste wise. Even with amazing desserts, the more bites you take, the magnitude of itâs greatness starts to taper down a bit after the first few bites.
Are seconds bad? I donât think so, as long as your first servings werenât gi-normous to begin with. Just remember that you donât need to over do it! When your body tells you to stop eating â then STOP EATING!
Make a conscious effort to enjoy the people around you. Arenât we all gathering on Thanksgiving (or whatever celebration) to spend time with each other? Yes, so enjoy your company, engage in conversation, laugh and CHEW SLOWLY. This is a guarantee that you wonât eat as much when you talk with people and give your food a chance to settle and your brain is told that youâre full (this usually takes about 15-20 minutes to occur.)
Along with chewing slowly, we should all chew each bite 20-30 times before swallowing completely! I know you think I sound crazy, but you will reduce the amount of food you eat by quite a bit. Why? Since youâre taking the time to chew your food purposely, you wonât be gulping down large portions every 5 seconds and by the time youâve been eating for 15-20 minutes and your body is saying âSTOP, IâM FULLâ â you wonât have consumed nearly as much food. Also, chewing this many times is the most important part of digestions since it breaks down your food to a point that once it hits your stomach, your stomach wonât need to work so hard to continue the digestion process.
Try not to drink a ton of liquid while you are eating. The reason is because it dilutes your digestive juices in your stomach and then it takes so much longer for your body to digest your food. This can lead to you feeling so full that you feel sick to your stomach. Give your food a chance to do its job once its in your body!
All in all, we need to demonstrate self control and we are more than capable of doing that! Take time to enjoy the food that has been prepared for you and enjoy the people surrounding you. These holidays have a purpose behind them, so focus on those purposes instead of making the food the center and most important aspect of the day.
Most importantly, when it comes to the food you eat, pray over your food and thank God for the nourishment to your bodies and protecting you from any harm. Thank Him for the family and friends that are surrounding you and the many blessings you have in your life. Thank Him for the life you have. If you are reading this, then you are alive! What a wonderful thing. On top of that, you canât be reading this post without a computer, ipad or smart phone! Be thankful! You are blessed! Now, be a blessing to others!

It is hard to believe that we are already one month into the fall season and that before long (if not already!) we will be bombarded with all things Christmas related. But, today, I wanted to share about some of our very favorite fall things to do with our daughter, Abigail.
This time of year is perfect for being outside all day long! The crisp autumn air, the bright sun, the sights and sounds of fall, all make for a wonderful outdoor experience. There are SO many fun things that you can do, but here are just a few of our favorites! So, without further ado, I give you:
The one thing we always make sure to do in the fall is to visit our local pumpkin patch! It may be small and quaint, but we love walking around and selecting our pumpkins and mums, taking a small hay ride, capturing a few special moments on our camera, and letting the farmers teach our little girl all about pumpkins.
This has been a new addition to our family fun, but recently my husband, Jim, acquired a small projector to play movies on. We set up a comfy place to sit in the backyard, hang up a big white sheet, and enjoy making our very own drive in of sorts in the back of our house! Projectors are pretty easy to rent and borrow, so I highly suggest getting your hands on one and giving a backyard movie night a try this fall!
If you’re already in your backyard for a family movie night, why not also set up a tent and have a camp out as well? I’m not much(read: NOT AT ALL) for camping, but if the weather is right and my own personal bathrooms are close, you can get me out there
We aren’t fortunate(or are we? enough to have large trees in our yard capable of being piled up and raked, but Grandma’s house sure does! There isn’t anything more quintessential childhood than running and jumping and burying yourself in a massive pile of leaves.
And of course, what is fall without a roaring bonfire, toasted marshmallows, and s’mores to enjoy? Getting sticky, sweet, and messy together make some of the most fun memories!
This is my list, but I would love to hear yours! So tell me,

Autumn is officially here! At least in Colorado! We are having beautiful and warm days (high 70’s to low 80’s), but the nights are cool and crisp! Leaves are turning bright yellow, orange and red – and the morning has brought a slight haze these past few days.
Typically I am more of a warm-weather person. I’m all about the sun, flip flops and being outside. That being said, I’m still a Colorado girl at heart. I like to get bundled up in chunky sweaters, wool socks and fur lined shoes. I like jumping in the Jeep with my husband and kids, all bundled up, to drive to the mountains to see the Aspen’s turning. And since we’re Colorado natives, no matter what the weather, you roll the windows down, crank the heat and put those hats on and enjoy the drive!
The other thing I like about autumn is that I start spending more time in the kitchen again, making delicious and yummy smelling foods! A few years ago I wanted to make a pumpkin pie – a pie that I’ve never liked. As in ever. I figured it was because store bought pumpkin pies were not close to one made from scratch, so I wanted to try making one COMPLETELY from scratch to see if I could like a real pumpkin pie!
I have to say, when I took the first bite of this from-scratch creation, I instantly became hooked. This is a tad more involved than other recipes – okay, a lot more involved, so make your special occasions more special by incorporating this into the menu. It is absolutely delicious! If you’re already a pumpkin pie lover – then you MUST try this and add it to your favorite’s list! It’s on ours, which is why we included it in my first cookbook – Real Food. Real Kitchen. So Good!
Yield: 2-3 pies
*for the flaky pastry crust
*for the spiced pumpkin pie filling and topping
(this will fill at least 2 pie dishes, depending on the size you make â believe me youâll be glad you have more than one)
FOR THE FLAKY PASTRY CRUST:
SUBSTITUTIONS:
if using canned pumpkin puree, choose organic | make your own puree using âpie pumpkinsâ, which is a pretty simple process | since it makes 3 pies, you can either bless someone else with one or freeze them for up to a couple months | the fresh ginger really makes a difference in the taste, I prefer fresh over ground

]]>One thing I love is pizza, I mean who doesn’t???
There’s something nostalgic about it, you bite into a cheesy piece of deliciousness and your tastebuds erupt with excitement and fun memories.
We have pizza night on Friday nights, a lot, not always but I’d say at least 1-2 times per month. You can make pizza healthier, for one, done’t get delivery, make your own. For the crust, you can use whole wheat (if it’s sprouted, even better) use sourdough, use a gluten free flour or even a healthier grain like quinoa or a veggie like cauliflower.
This recipe has no flour or grains, the crust is made from cauliflower. AND It’s so good!
