My kids often ask why they have to go to sleep at all.

Why isn’t an afternoon nap enough? Why do we have to sleep so much at night? And maybe most importantly to them, when are my parents going to bed and what am I going to be missing out on?

Embracing the Need for Rest

These are deep questions to young kids, and of course there’s always the “because I told you so” approach to settle their queries. Honestly, there are plenty of afternoons and nights when that is the only response I feel up to giving.

You need to go to sleep because otherwise mama is going to go crazy.

But there’s a deeper response that I sometimes give them, and it’s good for us all to reflect on too.

Really I am thankful for all their innocent questions because when I take the time to answer them adequately, it becomes a learning opportunity for them and a good reminder for me. And even though we plan for more structured ways to teach them about God, these short conversations are often what take root most effectively.

We were designed to need rest. Physiologically, emotionally, spiritually– we need time to reboot and reset. It’s true for my kids and it’s very true for me.

sleeping

This basic, but important, need is not without purpose. Sure we can overlook it and stick with the pithy reasons for why sleep is important. Ultimately, though, our need for rest points us to our limits and our dependence on the limitless One. This is what we tell our kids.

It’s easy as mothers to start our day with a to-do list and plow through, regardless of the messages our bodies and minds are sending us. We are chronically busy as a culture. Whether you work out of the home or spend much of your time in the home, you almost certainly feel the same crunch and pressure to do it all

A daily rest time is typically one of the first things cut when our schedule are bursting at the seams. The dishes and the laundry and the errands and the demands of our planners and people in our lives take precedence over our needs.

We do and do and do until we faint from exhaustion or snap at our kids because we are so stressed or get sick because our bodies are worn down.

We need to know our limits and embrace our need for rest without feeling guilty that we are not doingallthethings. Because when you can’t do it all, you need to prioritize what really matters.

Let’s give ourselves the freedom in our schedules and permission to not feel bad about recognizing our need to take care of ourselves, even while we are taking care of everyone else. You may feel like you are neglecting your lists, but what you are really doing is simply making a different choice and coming out more ready to be a better wife/mother/friend/worker/person.

books

So, what does daily rest look like for you?

Maybe it looks like a short reset with a coffee and a book while your children have independent play time.

Maybe you listen to an audiobook and take the long way home while you breathe deeply after a day of work.

Maybe what you really need is to take a nap while your baby naps.

Maybe all it takes is a good conversation with a friend that makes you laugh or think or remember you’re loved.

For me, it most often looks like a period of quiet time during my kids’ afternoon rest times. Not all of my kids nap anymore, but they all have their own rest time in their rooms. And while the house is quiet, this introvert savors the silence and soaks in the break from using all my words and meeting everyone’s needs.

Let me encourage you to figure out what is you need to give your mind and body the attention it deserves. Make rest a part of your day.You were created for such.

As I write this, there is a fresh coating of snow on the ground at my house. It’s our token snowfall of the year. We aren’t likely to get any more snow, which has one very significant meaning to me– Spring is on its way!

5 Easy Ways to Bring Spring to Your Home

Winter has never been my favorite season. Far from it. January and February are usually hard months for me when, tired of being cold all the time, I am impatient for the return of sunshine and warmer weather.

This year I tried to be very intentional about guarding myself from complaining and grumbling over the weather. After all, the seasons are ordained by God and are a blessing. Nevertheless, realizing that Spring weather is only weeks away is very exciting!

No matter how many weeks away Spring really is, we can start now making our homes feel more Spring-y and bright. If winter does decide to linger, making a few small additions now will make the wait more pleasant.

5 Easy Ways to Bring Spring to Your Home

1. Print new pictures for your picture frames

If you are anything like me, three years can go by before you even think about changing pictures in your picture frames. But putting fresh pictures in your frames can make a big difference in the look of your home. Even better, try to select pictures with spring colors and in which the subjects are wearing shorts and sandals rather than scarves and thick boots.

5 Easy Ways to Bring Spring to Your Home

(I recently made over our master bedroom as a Valentine’s Day surprise for my husband and printed summertime pictures for two large frames. Makes me readier than ever for tank top weather!)

2. Declutter

No surprise here, but things tend to accumulate during the winter. Though Christmas is usually the biggest culprit for increased clutter, it’s not the only one. Having to stay indoors more during the cold weather often means more crafts, more projects, more cold weather gear, and so on.

Start now to declutter your home. Pare down and organize toys. Simplify your closet. Give away or get rid of the extra things you don’t need but are taking up valuable space.

Making your home tidier (as much as you can if you have kids) and less cluttered goes a loooonnnng way to giving your home a breath of fresh (spring) air.

3. Add some greenery

I bought an ivy from the grocery store a few weeks ago when I was redecorating my mantle. It gave the perfect little element of life and helped to brighten up the room.

I would show you a picture…but I killed it. Which is pretty awful considering how low maintenance they are supposed to be. I am still deciding whether or not I will try again or simply replace it with a pretty little {plastic} ivy.

Real or fake, plants are a quick way to bring spring inside.

4. Make a spring art piece to display

Find a frame or embroidery hoop and fill it with a pretty reminder of spring. Flowers, sunshine, green grass, or simply a phrase or verse.

5 Easy Ways to Bring Spring to Your Home

Here are five ideas to get you started:

5. Paint it white

I discovered my love for white paint after reading the Nesting Place. Since then, I’ve painted all sorts of things white, from my entire dining room to pieces of furniture to all sorts of baskets and frames I have found at Goodwill

A few cans of white spray paint are an inexpensive and quick way to achieve a unified look with varying elements in your home. And, my favorite part, white elements makes a room look lighter and cleaner.

What is one way you decorate for spring?

On Being Organized... The days are long but the years are short.

Written by Allie @ The Purposeful Housewife, Contributing Writer

*Please meet Allie, she’s a new contributor here. I hope you’ll leave a comment on how you relate to organization.

Over the past year, I have had to become a more organized person. When you have three kids in three years, a marriage and household to run, you sort of get forced into things that don’t always match your personality. I’ve had to stop whining and just accept that my life calls for some organization. I started making “rules” for myself like no more going to bed without doing a thirty minute clean up, not letting the kids go to bed until they’ve picked up their toys, and wiping the counters and kitchen floor after every meal. It just helps keep things running somewhat smoothly.

There are so many parts of life and motherhood that are unpredictable and chaotic, so having at least something going along in a rhythm can take a huge load off when a stressful day comes around. But then, sometimes I do all I can and still run late, forget something important, or miss an appointment. For example: this morning I had my first Bible study at a new church we joined. So last night, I packed my purse, laid out everybody’s clothes and shoes, picked up the house, set my alarm, and went to bed.
This morning I made breakfast, cleaned up, and got myself and everyone dressed. In between those things, my oldest decided it would be a good time to go exploring in the backyard and get covered in dirt, my middle child felt breakfast wasn’t enough food and took about twelve things out of the pantry and left them on the kitchen floor, and my youngest pooped twice. This is why, when I got everyone buckled and I climbed in the driver’s seat, the clock read 8:45 and it started at 9:00, and was twenty minutes from my house.
  lelandgrass
I took a deep breath, tried not to yell as I broke up fights between my kids while I drove, and just got there. I got a parking spot right up front, which I thought was weird since I was late, and checked my kids into the childcare. The nice lady working there mentioned how “on it” I am for being early with so many kids. Yeah… Bible study started at 9:30, not 9:00. The upside is, I was early. The downside is, I had just rushed my very pregnant self all over my house trying to be on time when I actually had an extra thirty minutes.

And so goes life with children. I may do what I can to keep it all together, be organized, and manage my family well, but kids are dirty and messy and chaotic, and so is life with them. But you know? A little chaos never hurt anyone, and I think that’s what makes this whole journey fun. Maybe it’s just all about balance. So today I laugh at my morning and am thankful that I was early rather than late, and I let go of my need to have it all together and enjoy these sweet days with my little ones, because soon it will be all too easy for me to stay organized and have a nice, quiet house.
“The days are long but the years are short.” -Gretchen Rubin

What are your thoughts about being organized with littles?

Real Food on the Road | Day2day Joys

Written by Jenn @ A Simple Haven, Contributing Writer

This summer, my little family and I took a two and a half week road trip through Canada and Maine. We made several stops along the way; either in a hotel or a friend’s house for a night or for several days in a rental house.

We travel pretty regularly as a family but this was by far the longest we’ve been away from home and all of the conveniences home affords–especially in the kids and food departments.

Adventures in traveling with kids is a story for another day. Today’s topic is attempting to feed your family real food on the road.

Having spent a week in a beach house last year, I had learned a little about how to feed my fam decent stuff away from home. This year’s trip was way more challenging:

I had a kitchen to do some meal prep in, but not until about week into the trip. A few days were spent entirely on the road in rural Canada with few convenience meal prospects (the words “can we at least find a Taco Bell?” actually escaped my mouth). Other days were spent in cities eating out for every meal, the cost of which I was trying to offset with homemade stuff where I could.

The bottom line? Pack strategically and (outside of food sensitivities) lower your standards. And enjoy the ride.

Eating Real Food on the Road

1. Plan Ahead

I’m pretty plan-oriented in general, but trips and Christmastime are where my MBTI “J” comes out most. Make some lists, friend.

A month or two before your trip, start writing down all the food you think you’ll want to bring, buy, or make for the road.

My lists were divided into stuff for the car, perishables I’d want to cook with I had a kitchen, and non-perishables.

2. Buy Ahead

For me, one of the unforeseen costs of travel is always the snacky stuff for kids that I don’t usually buy. My kids’ fav are those organic baby food pouches. I know. They’re two and four and way beyond baby food. But they suck them down and I’m happy because they’re getting a modicum of veggies.

Downside? They ain’t cheap. So I hit up Costco before our trip and bought a bunch in bulk.

3. Pack Strategically

Depending on the length of your trip and the grocery situation at your destination, you’ll want to bring basics that might be hard to find (or crazy expensive) when you arrive.

For me, these were quality meats, cheese, milk/milk alternatives, good oils, and random favorites like real maple syrup and Ezekiel cinnamon raisin bread. I also packed stuff that would be annoying to have to buy/find at our destinations: a few spices and good coffee & tea.

The non-perishables all fit in a large canvas bag, no problem. The perishables required more attention; if I wanted the beef to last through our first week in hotels, I had to be diligent about keeping the cooler full of ice.

4. Make Ahead

One of the best ways to cut costs on the road–and eat decent stuff–is to make your own snacks. Some of my favorite road trip snacks to make are granola bars, homemade Larabars, muffins, and popcorn. Throw in some fruit or veggie sticks and a loaf of bread, a favorite nut butter, and raw honey to make sandwiches and you’re set.

5. Lower Your Standards

If you’re not the Type A type, forget I said anything. If the thought of feeding your kids Taco Bell makes you spasm, read on.

Barring food allergies or sensitivities, just relax. Yes, you want to feed your kids real food. But you also want to enjoy your vacation–so compromises will be necessary.

Over the course of our trip, my usually easy-going toddler started (publicly) screaming “yucky!!” to old stand-bys. In light of his sleep-deprivation and car-seat imprisonment, I decided not to die on the hill of food: he ate at least two meals consisting of little more than fries and ice cream.

I cringed, gave him an extra dose of cod liver oil, and reminded myself that we were in survival mode, not creating childhood habits.

What are your best tips for cooking/eating well while on vacation?

Are You A Slave To Your To-Do List?

Written by Karli @ Feed Me Mama, Contributing Writer

One of the biggest investments I have made in myself as a homemaker is purchasing a really nice, well thought out planner. The most useful part of my beloved planner is that each day has it’s own page, with it’s own “to do list” section. At night before I go to bed, and then again in the morning, I add to and edit my to-do list for the day, adding things I didn’t accomplish from the day before making sure I am not forgetting anything pertinent for the current day. Most days, I add many more items than I know that I think I can accomplish- but some days, I end up getting them all done anyway!

A few days ago, however, I got a serious kick in the pants from the Lord about my to do list.

It wasn’t a particularly busy day, mostly filled with laundry and random errands, but the list was full. Soon after waking, my mother called me with an emergency and needed me to come over to watch my brothers for a few hours- and I needed to be there in ten minutes! I quickly dressed the baby, started a load of laundry, and hopped into the car.

Flash forward to the end of the day- the laundry was still in the dryer, the to-do list was totally unchecked, and dinner was bought from the store. I felt like a failure as I apologized to my husband for not getting the sheets onto the bed after washing them early in the morning. I felt like I hadn’t don’t my job that day, as I carefully re-wrote the to-do list for the following day.

It was in that moment that I felt the Lord whisper his approval to me, reminding me that I had done His work, that I had served my mother and family and has still gotten things done around the home.

In the Lord’s eyes, I had accomplished what I needed to for the day simply by being obedient and willing to serve.

Maybe I didn’t feel like the supermom I wanted to, checking off the entire to-do list and starting with a blank slate the next day, but I had helped build the Kingdom by blessing my family.

How often do we chain ourselves to a to-do list, chores, or activities that we feel like we need to do in order to be a successful homemaker? Do we put this list before the actual, present needs of our families? Are we so busy “keeping the home” that we neglect to mother, to be emotionally and spiritually available, or even to be supportive wives?

To-do lists are beautiful things- they can increase our productivity, keep us centered and focused, and even bless our families with their results. But as homemakers, we must hold ourselves to a standard of grace, not perfection, as we set out to do the Lord’s work above all else.

Have you ever felt guilty for not completing your to-do list? I hope you offer yourself grace today!

When Survival Mode is Ok | Day2Day Joys

Written by Jenn @ A Simple Haven, Contributing Writer

Survival mode. It doesn’t sound particularly enticing, does it?

It seems to be the antithesis of living intentionally, toward your goals and in line with your values. It sounds like just getting by. And who wants to do that? Not me.

And yet, survival mode is where I find myself.

In a season of being newly pregnant and feeling yuck, with my husband in summer school and working longer hours + traveling more than usual, I am just trying to keep everyone alive here, folks.

Because this is my third pregnancy, I know a little about what to expect. For me, the nausea and exhaustion eventually subsides. Before too long, summer classes will be over and Hubs’s travel will slow down a bit.

Thankfully, there is an end in sight. But until then, I am lowering my expectations of myself, reassessing what’s necessary, and giving myself permission to just get by for now.

In fact, that’s how I’m going to define survival mode: Adjusting expectations and doing only what’s necessary for myself and my family amidst a challenging season.

As a recovering perfectionist, here’s what’s helped me be ok with that.

Why Survival Mode is Ok (and How it’s Working for Me)

Why It’s Ok:

Life is Full of Challenging Circumstances

My current challenges involve the first trimester of pregnancy and an unusual amount of solo parenting, but a myriad of circumstances may cause you to choose survival mode for a time.

Maybe it’s a busy season at work, a husband who is traveling frequently, adjusting to adding another child to the family, or having one or more sick kids.

In any case, new challenges require a reassessment of routines and expectations in the home. And depending on how long the challenging season lasts and how long it takes you to figure out a new “normal”, a time of survival mode might just be your ticket to, well, surviving.

We All Have Limits

I am one person; I can only do so much. Yes, through the power of Jesus, I can often do much more than I would have thought.

But is it reasonable to expect the same things of myself when I’m sick and pregnant as when I’m well? Probably not.

It’s Only for a Season

This is what I have to tell myself to make me ok with operating in survival mode. It’s not ideal, but it’s also not forever.  Frozen pizzas and extra TV time is not the best, but I know it won’t characterize my kids’ childhood.

How It’s Working For Me:

I’ve Decided What’s Essential

And it’s feeding and clothing myself and my family. That’s it.  Meal prep and laundry are pretty much my daily goals.

As food prep makes me nauseous and my daughter changes clothes six times a day, I consider meeting these goals quite the feat.

I’m Saying Yes to Help

While I used to struggle with asking for and accepting help, I’ve been so grateful for friends who have offered it over the last few weeks. From watching my kids so I could go to the doctor alone to bringing me pregnancy survival kits to time spent praying for little baby, I am so glad to have such a sweet community of support.

And what I’m saying no to? Extras.

Like trying to take the kids to the pool by myself, making fabulous dinners (more often, dinner is an odd assortment of snacky foods), or hosting company (as much as I love it, I’m mostly saving it for the second and third trimesters).

I’m Maximizing My Functional Moments

Most days, I do have a few hours where I feel functional. So I have a short list of chores, phone calls, errands, or other tasks that I try to tackle during those times.

I also try to prioritize getting the kids outside or to see friends when I can. Often, seeing other people (and getting away from my kitchen and all. the. smells.) boosts my mood and helps me forget how I’m feeling.

I’m Talking Things Through With My Husband

Hubs is very aware of his wife’s current state (hopefully, I’m explaining rather than complaining :)). But sometimes, he needs me to be really explicit about what I can and can’t manage to do right now.  So we’ve had some good talks about reasonable expectations for meals, housework, and the budget.

This past month, we tried out a monthly housekeeping service and used a chunk of our grocery budget for eating out. While he prefers a tidy home (as do I), he’s giving me lots of grace when there are no clean towels.

I’m choosing to trust God. (Most of the time).

I could go completely crazy worrying about how on earth I’m going to schlep around Canada for two weeks during my first trimester.  Or what I’m going to do the next time Hubs is away. Or for that matter, how I’m going to manage bedtime duty tonight by myself.

So instead, I try to focus on all the times God has provided strength, help, or encouragement in the past. And on promises about His faithfulness and provision. Help often comes in ways I wouldn’t have expected, but it’s always there.

How do you manage a challenging season of life?
