My first 5k

You know what? I ran a 5k & it was a BLAST! Not all the days of training at the gym or outside but the accomplishment of actually doing it, especially since it was one of my goals.

5k or 3.2 miles map

I’m not exactly sure what I had pictured in my mind, but it was not what actually happened. For the Covenant Health Marathon Event, there we different options: a marathon, half marathon, relay, and the 5k with well over 6,000 participants ranging from ages 5-99.

It was a sight to see when the shot blew and all the marathoners & half marathoners started. Hundreds upon hundreds ran on the streets of downtown Knoxville. Then fifteen minutes later, it was our turn, the 5k-ers. The shot blew and the excitement and intimidating feelings came over me and I ran.

My husband sprinted off and shortly I couldn’t see him anymore in the midst of the hundreds of runners  and I thought, “I can do this,” (even though we started up a hill… WHAT a way to start, especially with all the self doubt for a newbie) but then after a couple of minutes I saw him waiting for me saying “You can do this, great job!” and he said many encouraging words like that along the way.
About the half way point (I believe, there weren’t any signs) we made a turn going back up another hill we had just went down and that was the hardest part for me but at the same time a HUGE incentive and relief that there were still hundreds behind me. ( I had no idea what number I was amongst all the people during the run) While almost to the top of that hill I saw an elderly lady walking with her daughter or granddaughter going down the hill. That was amazing to see!

Whenever there were hills, I would take advantage of going down hill by letting my body go as fast as I could, weaving through people and letting the hill pull me down. Although most of the time all the people that I had just passed caught up with me as we were running on level streets because in all honesty I am a slow runner. However, it was nice to catch up with the “faster” people for a little while and that was how I caught up to my husband usually.

On the bottom of the last downhill I heard some on the sidelines say to everyone, “You’re almost there! three tenths left.” Hearing those words, I was so excited, even though it ended on an up hill street. After a 15 second walk (while my husband decided he had to go #1 in a porta-potty) I ran and ran to finish this 5k and shortly my husband caught up with me and stayed by my side. Once I reached the doors of Neyland stadium, with a smile on my face I ran as fast as I could. “I did it!” I thought to myself as I ran across the finish line.
As I write this and reminisce about the process of training to the day of I find it it similar in many ways to life. We have ups and downs, hard times and easier times, someone to tell us good job and ourselves to tell us we can’t or that we can but if we keep on trying and believing in ourselves and having faith and trust in God, we can do all things! Philippians 4:13
By the way, I found out that elderly lady was 90 years old and she wasn’t the last to finish. If you are thinking about running/walking a 5k, you can do it! (#1428 Hausman, Betty 90 Pioneer, Tn 1:14:07.9)
My results, out of 1441 people who completed the 5k: #651 Rachel 28 34:53.7, Anyone can do a 5k, whether running or walking! Thanks for all the support everyone! (My hubby would have been faster, but he stayed by my side, thanks babe!)

I guess this was my 15 minutes of fame, lol or if you really knew me, you would know I just ran a 5k! 🙂

  1. Although I don’t even know you, I am so incredibly proud of you. I know what you have gone through in your training. Lots of hard work!! My husband and I running in a half-marathon in a few weeks. Just like your husband, he could run so much faster than me, but insists on running with me. I love it!! Keep up the running!!!

  2. I agree- I just feel so proud for you! Great job- My knees are so funky, so I don’t run, but I can appreciate how hard this is! Loved your story 🙂
