Natural Fall Decorating Ideas

The holiday festivities are among us!

Everywhere you go right now, you are bombarded with Fall and even Christmas decor most likely. I love this time of the year so none of the decorations bother me, they actually just get me giddy like a child thinking about all of the holiday fun!

With all the decor comes a lot of MONEY! Last year, Americans spent $13.34 billion dollars on decorations for the Holidays. All the cute little scarecrows, center pieces, ornaments and wreaths add up and can easily make us spend more than we intended to.

I know I can get caught up in buying all kinds of decorations at Hobby Lobby or Micheal’s if I’m not careful!

This year I already have bought a few things at my favorite craft store but I also planned on incorporating some things from nature as well as to recycle some brown paper bags from my local grocery store and turn them into an easy thankful tree.

You can take items found in the woods and probably at a local park in your neighborhood that are of abundance right now: pinecones and leaves and decorate with them. Here are some tips I found around the web, a couple thankful tree ideas and one I came up with:

Recycled Thankful Tree:

This year, I want to incorporate more holiday family traditions, whether they are new or passed down. We went trick or treating for Halloween which was a tradition growing up for both my husband & I. We added a new tradition of reading the Pumpkin Patch Parable when we carved pumpkins.

Now that it’s Thanksgiving time, I wanted to do something that will teach our kids to express what they are thankful for and help them to understand what that means. To teach them that we are blessed because we have been given Grace!

The picture collage pretty much shows the steps we took.

The simple steps:

I took brown paper bags I got from my local grocery store after getting some food last week, cut them in half, let the kids paint them and then I cut them into leaf shapes. One day we found the twigs in our front yard. I held the twigs together while I taped them with clear tape. I then found a glass juice jar we have been reusing, filled it with rice (which I will use after we’re done the the centerpiece) then place twigs in. I whole punched the leaves and tied ribbon to each leaf. At dinner one night we talked about what we are thankful for and I wrote some of the blessings down. I then embellished jar with some ribbon and Fall wooden stickers I got last year for 75% off. Lastly, we hung the leaves on the tree and plan on adding a couple new leaves every day this month.

DIY Center Piece:

You can use things you find around your home, in your backyard or even buy some things at a craft store to make a beautiful center piece. If you make a center piece, whether it’s natural or not be sure to enter in a Fall Center Piece contest over at Stacy Makes Cents!

You can use:

  • pinecones
  • leaves
  • acorns
  • fruit
  • etc.

Decorating with food:

I found this awesome idea over at My Heart’s Desire where Amanda used vases and filled them with popcorn kernels, lentils and beans. This is a natural look as well as decorated with natural foods that you might have in your pantry.

  1. Rachel, that is lovely!!!! What a great idea! I’m going to try to do this next year when Annie is a bit older. 🙂

  2. Thank You Stacy! Can I enter the contest, just kidding! 🙂 It will be fun to do it with Annie next year!

  3. Love the variety of “thankful” trees. I think we’ll use some of those at our house this year. I agree, as well, so much holiday (fall) decor can be done with natural elements! It’s nice to invest in one or two really pretty, maybe handmade items, and then find the rest of your decor outside!
